Drawing Lessons

These are pieces of art that I did during the life drawing lessons in the first few weeks of our Applied art module. I found these lessons amazingly helpful and they really helped improve my drawing, especially the quick 30 second poses.

I also took this further and started drawing some of my own quick sketches of bottles and CD's around my desk to help me understand perspective.

I also learnt a lot of new techniques that I didn't know before as I had previously just drawn from my imagination but having the help from life drawing has now improved my drawings from imagination a lot.

Here are the drawings I liked from my life drawing lessons:

Useful Pages from The Fantasy Artists

The above is a collection of scanned images from a Fantasy book, I have been using this as a guide when drawing and the guide on proportions has helped me a lot. it also had a lot of information on how to pose a character and how to define the characters personality which helped me a lot in my character concept art as I wanted to create a hero.

Character Concept Update

Removed the hands to research other devices I could implement such as the research below I could add a hand cannon or other mechanical device to his right arm.

Character Arm concept

For my character design I wanted to implement a hand cannon or other mechanical device to the right arm of my character. So I decided to take a look at a numerous amount of characters which had a hand as a type of mechanical device.

Vernon Gate - Final - Environment task

During our lessons with Leavon he taught us a whole range of different utilities avaliable in Zbrush and was an amazing help. I also did several tutorials during the course of the module to upgrade my knowledge in Zbrush as I hadn't had much previous experience.

One of the tutorials was just the basic editing and different brushes, this helped me get started and was a good reference point - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-hRle7SpyA

I also learnt a lot from Mike Jensen's tutorials about hard surface modelling -

I also watched a lot of speed sculpting to see how people get the shapes and what brushes they use for certain effects, I found these of great use and were really amazing to watch.

Stephen Fry - Zbrush

Zbrush Mood Board

A collection of props made in Zbrush, I will be using this when creating my Battle Axe within Zbrush so i can gain more ideas on adding detail to the Axe with different engraving and where the props are soldered and hinged together.

Axe Prop Task Complete

Creation Process of Battle Axe

Quick Sketch

I decided to try improve my quick sketches while I was sitting down, so I picked up the pencil and started doing a quick sketch. looks pretty disfigured but I feel that I got the proportions and perspective ok, the right arm is a bit larger than it should be but the perspective was quite difficult to draw.

Character concept Photoshop, block colours

I am currently working on my character design now in Photoshop. I am now applying block colours to my character and using the sponge, burn and dodge tool to add shadows and lighting to where I think the pose requires it. I have been looking at multiple images and trying to use them within my own design. I have also been trying to use the research into anatomy to help define my characters pose and reproprotion some of the body and the angles in which I have drawn.I am overall quite happy with the pose but I think that the legs and left arm hand needs to be redone as they are looking quite crocked at the moment.

I wanted to also add a grenade into my characters right hand and once I have finished the pose add a flag behind him, with skulls beneath him to show the type of heroic character he is. I think a lot of my inspiration has come from games such as Starcraft, Unreal tournament, mass effect although I have not played Starcraft or mass effect I have looked at a lot of the art work and fell in love with it. Overall I think it is going quite well so far but I still have a long way to go and adding detail such as the troopers in Starcraft will be quite difficult, so I wish to go for a more MMO style look.

Final Prop Concept art - Battle Axe

So after going through tons of different ideas on what to do for my final design of my prop task I settled on creating a battleaxe. I started going down the route of weapons and found the battle axe to be the most deadliest looking weapon. After looking at a large stock of battleaxe images I could see the potential in designing my own adding different hilts and side blades to it. Above is my final design, I wanted something that looked quite heavy and had an aura of darkness about it. I decided to add a claw and small skulls around the upper handle of the axe as well as a small blade to the hilt.

I also thought about the mechanics on how this weapon would be used as it's a battle axe it would be held with two hands, I made the handle very long so that the user could put one hand towards the lower end of the handle and the other at the upper end in order to use both sides of the blade, using the lower end of the axe meant for quicker attacks as that side would be lighter whereas the upper end would be used for large lunging attacks.

I felt a battleaxe would make for a great end prop in Zbrush as we had already had a tutorial on axes wit Leavon so with this previous experience it would help me in recreating my own type of axe although I have added a lot more blades and detail to this, so hopefully my previous experience will help me with my new concept.
For my Vernon gate environment I started looking at castle motes and really wanted to implement these type of ideas onto my Vernon gate concept art. below are some of the castle motes that I fell in love with. from these I got a great feel of how to apply this to my environment. I could create the bridge leading to the castle and then reflect my building into the water giving it a really nice effect.
