Character Concept Update

Removed the hands to research other devices I could implement such as the research below I could add a hand cannon or other mechanical device to his right arm.

Character Arm concept

For my character design I wanted to implement a hand cannon or other mechanical device to the right arm of my character. So I decided to take a look at a numerous amount of characters which had a hand as a type of mechanical device.

Character concept Photoshop, block colours

I am currently working on my character design now in Photoshop. I am now applying block colours to my character and using the sponge, burn and dodge tool to add shadows and lighting to where I think the pose requires it. I have been looking at multiple images and trying to use them within my own design. I have also been trying to use the research into anatomy to help define my characters pose and reproprotion some of the body and the angles in which I have drawn.I am overall quite happy with the pose but I think that the legs and left arm hand needs to be redone as they are looking quite crocked at the moment.

I wanted to also add a grenade into my characters right hand and once I have finished the pose add a flag behind him, with skulls beneath him to show the type of heroic character he is. I think a lot of my inspiration has come from games such as Starcraft, Unreal tournament, mass effect although I have not played Starcraft or mass effect I have looked at a lot of the art work and fell in love with it. Overall I think it is going quite well so far but I still have a long way to go and adding detail such as the troopers in Starcraft will be quite difficult, so I wish to go for a more MMO style look.

Character concept design

Another character design, I really like where this one is going and can see great potential. I can really see him standing ontop of a mountain of skulls with a world on fire behind him almost like he's standing ontop of a galaxy. Within his chest I have put circles which I would use to give out a blue light. I also want more pipes coming out from his neck to the left hand side.

I think the proportion of his head needs to be changed and that I need to add more detail to show the right shoulder. I am still between mind on the type of footwear I want him to have but I think something that looks like snowboard shoes or perhaps a cyborg left leg.

This is where I got the idea of the blue lighted chest as well as maybe using the belt incorporate with this as well, I think this is an awesome image and would work really well with my character.

I love this drawing and really want to implement the style of this into mine, I love the shows and the knee plates. Also the arm that he has created has giving me several ideas on how I could change one of the arms my character has. As it is futuristic based I think that they would have altered the human body to be stronger than the bones we have so by adding a type of device to his hand would keep it up to date.

Another image that I really like and could use within my design I love how the neck adds to the pipework and how her face has small markings to outline that it's metal and she is some type of cyborg. I think that this is a great effect and her eyes really give the portrait some meaning that she doesn't belong, and is more than just a machine.

Character concept design

Working on my quick sketches I did this based on inspiration. I particularly like it and feel that I could turn it into a pretty great drawing, aswell as making it a very mechanical looking drawing, on the side of her hips I have added metal plates and where her elbows are I have added a type of mechanical bolt to show that her arms are mechanical. Also for her leggings I wanted some medieval plated legs as we have been looking at quite a lot of stuff based around the medieval era.
Some of the places I think the pose would work are within alley ways or tunnels. I found an photo on the internet which I change and distorted to work with the post.

Character Book Refrence

During my trip to the library I stumbled on a great book called The Fantasy Artist by Matt Dixon. In specific there was a chapter about creating a digital character concept from scratch. So I've decided to use this as reference when in the process of creating my character. From reading through it, it has a significant amount of information and techniques for making my character look as awesome as possible.

Research Human Figure and environments/characteristics

http://www.odditycentral.com/pics/thai-baker-makes-bread-shaped-as-human-body-parts.html

Frank Frazetta

Comic book artist in the 60s-80s

I love this image by Frank Frazetta showing a cave women with two sabre-toothed tigers I think this is awesome and he has depicted her very well with her hair flying up showing both a dangerous but sexy look within the pose.

Alan Lee

Tiffy The Cadet - Original Digital painting then from there Alan moved it into Zbrush.
I particularly like these as it's very futuristic and the character shows some cool characteristics. I feel that the short hair was assigned to her to give her more of a tom boy
look which goes with her role of being a cadet.

A very beautiful piece of art work I love how the sky works over the top of the characters and how beautiful the female is and the proportions and perspective is amazing.

An image from lord of the rings by Alan Lee, a very awesome imaginativeness drawing of a tree person, I love the way that he has formed the human body shape using a tree which gives me different ideas for my organic and mechanical task.

Kittiwat Unarrom

Human body parts created with loafs of bread

When I saw the below images it really amazed me how you can use simple ingredients to create such amazing art work. Kittiwat creates using body parts using loafs of bread which look amazingly real, I loved these images of how they are betrayed in a tin tub which really made me think how we treat animals and that one day the life cycle could turn around to us being like this. It really made me think of betraying my character in a way that makes us think.

I think the image above is amazing the author has blended in the inside of the body very well with the outside. The proportions are also very good and he seems to have some style of making the shadow very curved and has a nice shadow on the background.

Another image I particularly like, and also had some great ideas if I was to redraw this as I could add some sort off mechanical device down his back connected to the back off his head. I also like this pose a lot as it seems to me that it symbolises that he feels as though he is in the cage.

Viking Paintover

I decided to do a paint over of the Viking I drew within our life lessons just to get some more practice in before I begin my final character piece. I just wanted to use basic block colours and see how I could combine them. I took a colour pallet from the net and decided to stick with that.

I have been looking at the work of Jamie Williams Grossman

Research into the female figure and lighting

For my character design tasks I have taken into looking at female figures in front of the camera. This has been particularly useful for the creation of my character. the images below are photography shots the top row shows a blank background with lighting composition so having this reference helps me identify how my lighting would work given certain perspective angles.

I particulary like the poses in the middle row at the far right as this really identify that she has a lot of attitude and style, so I have also taken the characteristics of what these poses symbolize and how these females are put across in a "sexy" way.

Again these images have been taken from a modelling website so I could get some different poses which I can then sketch up for myself and have some self learning on the different perspectives of these shot's taken. I love all of these images and they really are great poses. I particularly like the top left one which makes a really great silhouette. I also took some of the models close up as I may want to deviate and focus on just the face.

I also love the middle end row image which I think is an amazing shot and really adds to the perspective. although the image below that is something that I would really like to recreate in my own way as using a reflection can really add to an image. I could also change the reflection to be the darker side of my character which would really add to here dangerous yet sexy side and also add a lot of characteristic.

With these poses I wanted to take into account how props really add to images and how we act given different props. as you can see when given a handgun the poses change dramatically and are pretty much set around the gun being in the foreground and the character being in the background in the first row left image the gun is the main thing that we look at and it really gives the character a sexy feel which I would like to incorporate with my character and making her give off a very sexy but dangerous aura.

After finding some work by Kazuhiko Nakamura I decided to look into more of the stuff he has done and find his work amazing.

Interview with Kazukhiko Nakamura, he describes hes mechanical mirages and speak about a lot of insightful features such as how he goes around creating these masterpieces and what inspires him.

http://www.v6dp.com/bbs/thread-22391-1-1.html - Another site I stumbled upon which shows a lot of mechanical objects mixed with human like characters as well as other mammals.

Some more amazing images which I can use for my concept. I particularly like the one in the centre showing how you could use old basic materials to function a human like walk.

research

Recently I have been doign some research and looking at how mechanical objects are used to reconstruct bones and become part of our everyday living such as a metal knee and how this could evolve in the future.

Quick update

Just some quick design ideas, robotic hands, as the post when I drew it sort of gave of a dismal feeling I thought maybe of having a background in a lake / swamp etc with maybe a bit of moonlight.

ORGANIC + MECHANIC -

Starting stage of changing my 30 second sketch from a life drawing lesson into a more mechanical female.
just currently painting a first layer after getting a basic shape to her and adding basic detail. Will continue to finish off the first layer then start working on giving her some mechanical designs... see what I can find around the house!

Applied drawing and Visualisation

Within this blog I am going to post life drawing which I have done within my art lessons and also show some photoshop work.
